For many young people in the coastal US who are looking to purchase a home of their own, 2018 may feel like a daunting time to enter the market. With median home prices around $1,500,000 in places like San Francisco and parts of New York City, those seeking to purchase their first home simply can’t afford to live there.
According to Apartment List’s recent index of the top 75 US cities, which rated locations based on jobs, affordable rent and home prices, many coastal cities rate very poorly overall, indicating a shift in the desirability away from coastal locations and towards the midwest and the south among millennials. And though many young people may be drawn to the idea of living in an urban cultural hub, the reality is that rental and home affordability must often come first. As a result, half of millennials today live in the suburbs and a surprisingly low 25% live in urban areas.
According to the index, the top ranking metros for millennials in this survey were – perhaps surprisingly – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Provo, Utah, and Madison, Wisconson. A quick Zillow search brings up some charming gems in each of those areas, all affordable and with plenty of local amenities, schools and jobs to recommend them.
